Are You Asking The Right Question About Pricing?
When looking to upgrade or create a new website, many people are overly concerned with the question, “How much will this website cost?” Sadly, that is the wrong question to be asking. A better question would be “What will produce the most value for my business overall?”
Someone who decides to go with a “free” website or to do it themselves may think they got a better deal than someone who paid $5,000 for their site. But, what they are not taking into account is that the competitor’s $5K website is probably getting more traffic, more leads, and more business than the “free” or budget site they build. This is largely due to the fact that they invested in someone with experience to build their site for them. So, in terms of revenue, that bargain site could be costing them thousands of dollars in lost revenue they might have otherwise gained.
Let’s face it, most budget or free websites look like budget websites. I don’t know about you, but when I am looking for someone to do business with online, I do look at their website first. And, what I see on first impression matters. If it looks “low budget,” my impression of their business is that they don’t really care much about quality. I am not particularly fond of doing business with people who are okay with doing low quality work. Are you?
On of the world’s greatest investors, Warren Buffet, said that the key to making good business decisions is understanding Opportunity Cost. This means not just asking “Will I get a good return on my investment?,” but also asking, “Of all the things I could do with my money, what is the overall best thing I could do?”
